Tips for those of you with mature hair!
If you are curious about this post, you have probably had gray hair for a while and feel that your hair doesn't quite feel like it used to. It may be difficult to care for and you feel that your usual hair routines are not working at all. This is because as the hair matures and turns gray, the structure of the hair changes and thus the way it behaves. But don't despair, there is help. In this post we will give you tips on how to best care for and look after your mature hair.

Why does mature hair feel different?
The hair pigment (melanin) is produced in the hair follicle and lies like a tube in the hair shaft. Melanin gives the hair both color and natural hydration. When melanin production stops, which is genetically programmed, the hair shaft can be likened to a straw, it becomes hollow and colorless. The natural hydration in the shaft decreases and this, together with the scalp becoming drier over the years, means that the hair needs more help from the outside than before. Therefore, mature hair requires a different hair care routine than pigmented hair. Did you know that there are only white hairs, so there are no gray hairs. The transition begins with a few white hairs, when several hairs lose their color, you get a mixed/gray shade and eventually most of them become completely white-haired. At a percentage of white hairs of about 30%, you usually feel a bigger difference, that the hair becomes drier and feels coarser or more brittle than before. But with the right products and treatments, you can get softer, shinier and more manageable hair again.
8 TIPS ON HOW TO BEST TAKE CARE OF YOUR MATURE HAIR
1. Gentler and more moisturizing hair care routine
Your hair needs more oil and moisture than it did before. Maybe you've been using a volumizing shampoo to get fuller hair all these years, but now that your hair is drier, it just makes it frizzy and brittle. Then you need to switch to a milder and more moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. A really good tip is to boost your conditioner with a few drops of hair oil for extra care from time to time.
2. Replenish with hydration often
Adding extra moisture between washes makes a difference. Squeeze a leave-in cream into the lengths of your hair if they feel dry and frizzy in the morning. Squeezing in oil in the evening and letting it sit overnight also does the trick. Another tip is to have a spray conditioner in your handbag, available in a travel pack here, perfect to spray in during the day.
3. Feel your scalp
It is important that you feel your scalp, if it has started to become drier, it is a signal that you do not need to wash your hair as often as before, which many see as a great advantage.
4. The Balm Method
One method that works very well on mature hair is the conditioner method. Since fat dissolves fat, you simply wash your hair with conditioner only. When you exclude shampoo (which always contains some type of more or less drying and cleansing surfactant), the hair is able to retain more moisture and thus become less dehydrated.
5. Boost your hair through regular brushing
To strengthen your hair, you can work with the blood circulation in the scalp and then our brushing technique is fantastic. It involves giving your scalp a proper massage by taking 100 brush strokes per day. When you brush your hair and scalp, the natural sebum produced in the sebaceous gland is also spread out and moisturizes the hair completely naturally. If you brush your hair regularly, it can have a great effect on hair growth as well. Here you can read more about the benefits of brushing your hair properly.
6. Style with minimal heat
Heat styling is drying and it is good if you reduce the use of hair dryers and heat rods as much as possible. With our Hair Towel Turban, your hair dries extra quickly after washing and you need to spend less time on the drying part, especially with a hair dryer. However, since mature hair has a tendency to become a little frizzy, many people want to shape their hair with heat and if you are one of them, make sure to use a leave-in product that is also both moisturizing and heat-protective.
7. Detox your hair for optimal shine and luster
At regular intervals, the hair needs to be detoxed from coatings in order to optimally absorb the care you give it in the form of moisture and grease. With our Alg in treatment, air pollutants, residues from styling products, etc. are detoxed away without drying out the hair and making it possible to really absorb new products from other care products. And also from the hair a clearer and brighter color when the coatings disappear.
8. Dye mature hair
We think gray hair is super pretty. But if for some reason you still want to dye your hair, at Green Heads we choose between two different ways to dye mature hair. If you want to cover gray hair 100%, we use one of our New Generation colors, which are synthetic but non-toxic colors that give a shiny and soft result. If you want an even more gentle and moisturizing alternative, we choose plant color. Plant color does not cover 100% but gives a more lasered impression, so white hairs become lighter than those that still have their own pigment. However, all hairs get a tone of the shade you want to dye your hair in. Plant color therefore also gives a slightly more natural result and is also perfect for those of you who are thinking of letting your gray hair grow out, but want to do it more gradually.
