Silicone-free for hair, health & environment
Silicones have long been a natural ingredient in many hair products. They are used to provide a quick feeling of softness, shine and suppleness. But behind the temporary surface effect lie several problems – both for the long-term health of the hair and for the environment. That is why we at Green Heads have chosen a different path.

What happens to your hair when you use silicones?
When silicones are applied to the hair, they form a thin, water-repellent film around each hair strand. This film may temporarily provide a smooth and shiny surface, but the effect is cosmetic rather than nourishing.
-
Blocks moisture and nutrition – because the silicone membrane seals the hair shaft, moisturizing and repairing ingredients may have difficulty penetrating. In the long run, the hair risks becoming drier and more brittle, even if it initially feels soft.
-
Builds up over time – many silicones are difficult to dissolve in water and require strong sulfates to wash out. The result is that they accumulate layer upon layer, making hair heavy, flat and difficult to style.
-
Masks problems – silicones can hide wear and split ends instead of fixing them, which actually makes the problems worse in the long run.
Are there different types of silicones?
Yes, silicones can be divided into different groups depending on their chemical structure:
-
Non-water-soluble silicones (e.g. dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane) are the most problematic. They create a long-lasting film that is difficult to wash off and contribute the most to build-up.
-
Partially water-soluble silicones (e.g. dimethicone copolyol) can be rinsed out more easily and leave less product residue on the hair. They may therefore be perceived as “kinder” to the hair, but are still problematic for the environment.
-
Water-soluble silicones break down more easily in contact with water, but still have no conditioning function. These are also difficult for the environment to break down and instead end up in our cycle and do not contribute anything positive to the health of the hair.
In conclusion, some silicones may feel lighter on the hair, but none of them are good for the environment – and none provide nourishment or long-term care.
Environmental impact of silicones
Most silicones are synthetic polymers that are not biodegradable. When they are rinsed out in the shower, they are carried with the water to sewage treatment plants, where they are very difficult to filter out. Ultimately, they risk ending up in our lakes and oceans, where they can accumulate in sediments and negatively affect ecosystems.
Why we say no to silicones
For us, professional hair care is about creating lasting results – not short-term effects. We want our products to:
-
Really strengthen your hair through proteins and plant-based ingredients.
-
Moisturize and nourish deeply instead of encapsulating and masking.
-
Contribute to a better environment through biodegradable formulations without harmful substances.
That's why we replace silicones with plant-based alternatives that actually add something to the hair: broccoli seed oil for shine, rice protein for strength, aloe vera for moisture, and plant-based biopolymers for protection.
Summary: genuine care over illusion
Silicones may give a quick, cosmetic effect – but they do not do your hair, your health or the environment any favors. By opting out of them, we are investing in ingredients that work with the hair instead of against it, and that provide results that last over time.
At Green Heads, it goes without saying: shine, strength and health should be built for real – not created by a film that hides problems.
